The Wheelchair Football Association is delighted to announce an exciting new partnership with Powerchair Football charity, Goals Beyond Grass.

This initial one-year partnership will see the national WFA Cup competition named as the Goals Beyond Grass WFA Cup.

About Goals Beyond Grass:

Goals Beyond Grass (GBG) was founded in 2016 following a successful start in Powerchair Football by the CEO Brian Dix. He recognised that the work being done to engage the community and give disabled people more chances and opportunity to engage in fun, social sports was not enough. He wanted to use Powerchair Football as the vehicle and take the sport out to the community giving everyone the chance to feel included.

Now the charity operates daily by the philosophy and values:
  • Sport for all (no one will ever be turned away from taking part in our activities)
  • Social and Physical (we will encourage a coming together of like-minded individuals)
  • Community (we will involve the whole community, able-bodied and disabled)

Outreach
Goals Beyond Grass provides powerchair football sessions to schools, colleges and universities. GBG aims to raise awareness of the sport and in turn produce more players, coaches and fundraisers for local clubs.

Set-Up
Goals Beyond Grass can offer help and support to any individuals or organisations wishing to set up their own, local powerchair football club.

GBG apply a 4 stage process to get you up and running:

  1. Identify and engaging local partners
  2. Introduction weekend
  3. Establish a regular powerchair football club
  4. Create and implement a development plan
Support
We want to develop the game and assist in any way we can - that is why our services include ongoing support. Whether it is advice about fundraising, diversifying into other areas or player of coach development we can help.

Our connections with several disability sports give us an understanding of a variety of needs.

David Lewis, Chairperson of Wheelchair Football Association commented:

"The WFA are extremely excited to have launched our partnership with Goals Beyond Grass. We see this as an postive development for the sport of Powerchair Football and the start of some exciting working opportunities between The WFA and GBG.

The strength of both organisations coming together to work as one can only be of benefit to the sport of Powerchair Football.  Our partnership will provide a real platform for us to highlight the physical and physiological benefits of Powerchair Football, get more people involved and raise the profile of the sport."

Brian Dix, CEO of Goals Beyond Grass commented:

"The WFA Cup is the most inclusive cup competition in the world. Players of all standards, from beginner grass roots through to the elite internationals get the opportunity to compete for glory against each other. This ethos and the opportunities the cup provides reflects so clearly, what Goals Beyond Grass are trying to achieve, making this partnership a perfect fit for both organisations. Everyone at GBG is very excited to have our name associated with the competition"

When speaking about the new cup sponsorship, David also said:

"The investment from Goals Beyond Grass will have a real impact on all the players and team competing.  It will allow us to deliver a top quality competition that will really help to showcase the sport and introduce it to a new audience."

This one-year partnership will see the national WFA Cup competition named as the Goals Beyond Grass WFA Cup.

The WFA Cup is a competition that is open to all affiliated Powerchair Football clubs.  Teams are drawn and games are played "on the road" in a knockout, round by round format.  The final is played at St George's Park as part of the FA’s Disability Cup Weekend. The FA Disability Cup is entering its fifth year and is the largest competition of its kind in this country, ensuring that players within impairment-specific football have a national FA competition to call their own, complete with dreams of reaching St George’s Park for finals weekend.

The competition has grown year on year and every two years the Cup’s winner automatically qualifies for the European Champions Cup. The 2018/19 WFA Cup had a record 27 teams enter, making it one of the largest single impairment specific football cup competitions in the world.

The Goals Beyond Grass WFA Cup Second Round Draw:

All second-round fixtures of the GBG WFA Cup have now be finalised and teams have until the end of January to complete their respective fixtures.
