This month we will be focusing on the skill of "Dribbling".

This simple exercise can be used to gauge players’ level of dribbling ability, as well as be used to coach them on how to slow/stop the ball in an unopposed setting.

Equipment needed
:

  • 8-10 tall cones
  • Footballs

Set up:

Straight dribble & stop

Challenge the player to dribble the ball in a straight line through the gate and then stop the ball completely. They then dribble the second ball through the opposite gate and do the same.

Coaching points:

  • Lots of small touches
  • Appropriate use of speed
  • Keep the ball close to the attachment
  • Use of the players big wheel/back wheel to stop the ball
  • Player to drive past the ball then turn and use back wheel

Dribbling Slalom

Challenge the player to dribble the ball in and out of the cones before dribbling in a straight line to finish.

Coaching points:

  • Lots of small touches
  • Appropriate use of speed
  • Keep the ball close to the attachment
  • Move ball to either side of attachment to change direction
  • Use of back wheel to slow ball down if required

Progressions:

Simple progressions for these activities can include:

  • Staggering the cones.
  • Introducing additional players with their own ball to provide opponents to keep the ball away from.
  • Use of traffic light system to encourage players to stop & change direction.
