Starting a Wheelchair Football Club
The WFA is currently in the process of writing a guide to "Starting A Wheelchair Football Club". Until this document has been completed, below are a number of recommendations to help you begin the process of Starting your own club:
- All coaches are advised to have completed a FA Level 1 Coaching certificate and become a FACA member.
- It is then recommended that coaches undertake the FA Coaching Disabled Footballers course and the FA Coaching Workshop For Power Chair and Wheelchair Football, along with any other FA courses, in order to develop their skills and knowledge. The FA Coaching Workshop For Power Chair and Wheelchair Football is currently being developed and is expected to be piloted by December 2006
- Work with local sports development units or local disability organisations that work with people that use powered or manual wheelchairs to establish player links.
- Establish funding and look in to in-kind contributions to run regular sessions. (Examples of potential funders such as Awards For All /Football Foundation Small Grants Schemes)
- Register your club that would like to play power chair football with the Wheelchair Football Association. Please visit www.thewfa.org.uk/register
- Purchase a set of WFA approved and safety tested attachments with clips. These could be funded by sponsorship, funding or grants.
- The WFA recommend that the clubs purchase the attachments, but players buy their own set of clips. These clips are individual to every chair, but attachments can be interchanged.
- All general risk assessments and health and safety requirements must be in place to run your coaching sessions and club. By becoming a FACA member you will be covered by insurance to coach all levels of ability.
- You must then work in your local area in order to create match play opportunities, whilst the WFA are working to form a league and competition structure. This should be done in conjunction with your local County FA.
