WFA Priority Areas

The Football Foundation At present the WFA have 3 "Priority areas" for the work of the Football Foundation project. These were decided by the WFA Steering Group following the results of an audit of wheelchair football activity in 2010.

These "Priority areas" are based on the FA regions and are reviewed on a three monthly basis to monitor progress and decide on future plans.


North West region

The North West was selected due to the number of new teams forming in the Region. Bolton Bullets had started the development of a "regional league", so it was decided to help establish this competition as one of the the first "WFA Regional Leagues". The WFA have held a Coaching course and Referees Training course in order to recruit and upskill the volunteers in the region.

At present there are 5 affiliated Clubs in the region, with one of these currently participating in the National League.

East Midlands region

The East Midlands has a great deal of support for Powerchair Football, thanks to the Clubs, County FA's and EFDS. The National League competition is based in this region and we are working with a number of "local" partners. The Clubs have equipment that can support delivery of activity, so the region will be used to trial a number initiatives:

  • The East Midlands Powerchair Football Association has been formed to lead development in the region.
  • A Schools competition is being run in conjunction with the Competition Managers

A Coaching Course has been held to train 20 additional coaches to help with Club development and delivery.

At present there are 4 affiliated Clubs in the region, with one of these currently participating in the National League. There are a number of additional Clubs that are in the process of forming and affiliating.

South East region

The South East has the largest number of affiliated Clubs at present (6) with a number of other Clubs in the process of setting up. At present there is no established regional activity. The WFA will work with the Clubs and Organisations in the area to begin work on this.

The WFA are working with Treloar College, who ran the first ever South East event in February 2011. This saw 4 teams take part and will become an annual event. There are plans to host a Coaching course and other events at Treloars College, due to the facilities they have available.

Currently there are 6 affiliated Clubs in the region, with two of these currently participating in the National League. There are a number of Clubs that are forming.
