Wheelchair football project ready to roll with £134,445 funding success
Disabled football in England was today given a major boost following a £134,445 grant awarded by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity, to the Wheelchair Football Association.
The funding boost will allow the Wheelchair Football Association to employ a full-time coordinator to develop the sport of powerchair football across England. The grant will also provide equipment to enable the association to deliver demonstrations and support new and existing clubs and teams to develop, enable more severely disabled players to access the sport.
The Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities throughout the country. Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity with a £40m budget going straight into the heart of football.
Since its launch in July 2000, the Foundation has invested £7.4m into 161 disability projects across the country.
Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation said: “We warmly congratulate the Wheelchair Football Association for their hard work and dedication in securing this award.
“Football is our national game and the Foundation is investing money from the Premier League, The FA and Government into the grass roots to help give everyone the opportunity to play it and stay healthy.
“This exciting new project is the latest example of how we are working with key partners to create a level playing field across the country and opening up access to sports.”
Ricky Stevenson, Chairperson at Wheelchair Football Association, said: “This is great news for the association and disabled people across England, as a new sport this will enable more players to have the opportunity to try the sport and with this support we can hopefully support the creation of sustainable clubs for regular participation. Without the support of the Football Foundation and our other partners – Invacare, The FA and Davies Sports – this would not be possible.”
