News: Grass Roots Football LIVE to Focus on Disability Football
2009-05-28
In particular, visitors to the show on Sunday 14th will be able to watch a number of presentations and demonstrations ranging from unified football for people with learning disabilities to fast and furious action in ‘Powerchairs’.
Managing Director Bob Rosen commented “We have chosen Special Olympics Great Britain as our official Charity Partner for the next three years. They are leading the way in using football to promote social inclusion by supporting the integration of athletes with and without a learning disability in a competitive sporting environment.”
Visitors wishing to learn more about the programme can attend a seminar in the TalkSport Theatre at 10.15 on Sunday 14th, followed by a practical demonstration in the Errea Coaches Arena at 1.30 pm.
On the same day, the Wheelchair Football Association will provide a demonstration of Powerchair Football. The sport is played throughout the UK with teams from Newcastle to Truro. WFA Chairman Ricky Stevenson said “We are delighted to be able to bring this fast growing sport to the country’s most popular football show. The players who will be participating have represented their country in the world championships and we will also be looking to get one or two of the show’s celebrities to take part!”
But the focus doesn’t end there! Visitors will also get to see a demonstration from the England Blind Squad (Courtesy of Hereford United Football in the Community) and a group of players with Downs syndrome being put through their paces by the Community team from Swindon Town FC.
“Football has long been enjoyed by groups suffering from a variety of disabilities”, continues Rosen “and is often one the activities most looked forward to. Hundreds of multi team clubs throughout the country run specific disability projects and we are really pleased to be able to use the show to highlight so many different initiatives.”
