News: England begin with defeat
2007-10-09
England kicked off their FIPFA World Cup campaign against the USA. The team had the worst possible start, conceding within 30 seconds from a well struck set-piece.
The team struggled to recover from this early blow, with nerves clearly on show. Things got worse, as they conceded again from a set-piece situation. After this, the team rallied and were the stronger side for the remainder of the half. Unfortunately, they could not find a way through a solid USA defence, and ended the half trailing 2-0.
The USA started the 2nd half strongly and following a succession of corners, they forced the ball home, to end any real hopes of an England fight back. The team battled on, and came close on a number of occasions to grabbing a consolation. This goal proved illusive and the team must now regroup quickly for tomorrows matches.
The other results on the opening day saw Japan defeat Belgium (3-0), France started strongly with a heavy defeat of newcomers Portugal (10-0), and Japan sit on top of the table following a 4-0 defeat of Denmark.
